Denley NY

What do we know about Denley?

  • Was the home of Thomas and Ellen Dwyer Walsh - our second great grandparents
  • Located a few miles south of Port Leyden
  • Was named Hulbertville before the name was changed to Denley (at least up to 1905)
  • The Denley dam is located here
  • The Denley Rd comes out right in this area (connects Rt. 12 and 12D)
  • The area is no longer called Denley (no town here)
  • There is a canal lock (Black River Canal) in this area that our family used to tend
  • There was a train wreck here - 1908
  • Denley had a train station
  • Denley is Leyden rearranged (first three letters moved to the back)

New information on Walsh Line

I was contacted today by Joelene Ammoscato concerning a DNA match on gedmatch. Our Gedmatch has our MRCA at 5.1. She is also at 5.1 for Tina and 4.8 for Steve which means she is probably a 4th cousin (could be 3rd to 5th).

In looking at her tree on WikiTree, I discovered that she has a Margaret Walsh in her direct line. Margaret's birth is listed as abt. 1843 so she is probably not the same generation as Thomas Walsh, but perhaps could be a niece (or daughter).  If she was a daughter he would have left her behind at a fairly young age when he came to America so it is more likely she is a niece. Margaret's daughter Mary Mannix was born in Castleisland County Kerry which is about 10 miles from the County Cork border.  It is quite possible that our family was from an area in Western Cork near the Kerry line.

In reviewing Joelene's online presence it was discovered that she is from New Jersey. This is the second Walsh DNA hit I have received from New Jersey. The last one was from Patterson New Jersey (just across the river from Mount Vernon New York where Michael Walsh was born).

This information requires additional research and conceivably another big break but we are slowly chipping away at the brick wall that is Thomas Walsh.
